Why I'm Pissed And Cranky Dear Crypto Friends, Last week at SXSW I got chatting with some crypto people at one of the events. So far, so good. One of them asked about our business model. I explained what we do. Independent news, unbiased research, no ads, all the stuff you know as a reader of Crypto Briefing. This person laughed derisively at me, and said "That's bullshit. Nothing's free." No, it's not, I agreed. At least not forever. I told him we are moving toward a paid model for our most valuable reports, but that earning trust and proving value takes time. Then they said something that made me absolutely furious: I didn't have a notepad, so forgive me for paraphrasing, but their comment was along the lines of "Get with the program, sucker. Everybody's making money, take it while you can get it." What a cynical jackass. We've spent 18 months doing this now. We've written over 1,800 articles, delivered 200 research reports, spoken at events on our own travel budgets - and this... person... just wanted to get rich quick with no effort. I'm being restrained here, but I'm sure you know what exactly I'm saying internally... We've seen other people do this to the crypto community over and over and over again. It's exhausting to watch these people appear, demand money, and be gone - before we've even released our first product. It's not that we're jealous because we haven't started to make money yet, that's our own choice. It's that people like this don't understand value. And I will be clear on this: value is derived from experience, talent, and dedication. Trust is derived from sharing value. If you think that we've dedicated ourselves to this community, that we have some measure of talent for what we do, and that we've proven our experience over 18 months, please spread the word. I was a bit too stunned to really answer this person when they laughed at the value we place on trust. But if it happens again, I'd like to share your comments with that type of greedy fool. I'd like to prove that the creation of value is what crypto needs, not just another get-rich-quick scheme from a jumped-up Wall St reject. (And he was. He's probably reading this, so send happy thoughts his way...) Would you be willing to share your experience of Crypto Briefing? A line or two so I have a better answer than 'stunned silence' next time? It would really help... If so, please drop me a comment - jon@cryptobriefing.com Thanks for supporting us. |
I'm pretty damn angry, and I think I have reason to be.
