A Human Rights Activist's Response to Bitcoin Critics
Alex Gladstein, Chief Strategy Officer of the Human's Right Foundation, wrote a piece in response to the various media attacks on Bitcoin.
He posits that mainstream Bitcoin critics don't actually understand how it works, and are fulfilling the historical role of skeptics of a new technology early in its life cycle.
While he disagrees in most of what was said he do concede that there are many bad actors in the industry, charlatans and hype chasers.
But it is foolish to conflate those negatives with the technology that is Bitcoin.
When addressing Bitcoin's relative speed when compared to other Fintech network. Alex argued that Bitcoin's architects and ongoing community made an engineering trade off at the base layer, choosing security and censorship-resistance over speed.
Today, more than 75% of Bitcoin's energy usage is estimated to come from renewable resources, contrary to most naysayers' argument that Bitcoin is contributing to carbon pollution.
However, the most important contribution of Bitcoin to human rights is that Bitcoin will help the most vulnerable on this planet, those without bank accounts, identities, or access to the financial system.
In a world where oppressive regime can snuff out one's bank account, or devalue bank notes on a whim, anyone can send and receive bitcoin with just a phone and internet connection.
"Unlike the modern financial system that only permits selective access, Bitcoin is open to everyone. It cannot discriminate."
